Hofburg - The Imperial Palace

When the Hofburg Palace was first constructed, it was used as a medieval castle. However, today the castle, also known as The Imperial Palace, has been transformed as a place used by Austrian officials. Interestingly, the chapel, called Burgkapelle is the only part of the castle that still looks and feels like its medieval past.

Over the years as the Habsburg’s power of Austria grew, the castle also grew to become their incredible residence. For this reason, you see a unique blending of different architectural styles that include just about everything from gothic to art nouveau. Even so, this is just one more aspect of the castle that makes it so fascinating and such a wonderful place to visit.


The castle is today the home to the National Library, called Osterreichsche National and the Imperial Treasury, called Schatzkammer. Additionally, the Hofburg castle is home to a wonderful collection of musical instruments, along with weapons, the Museum of Ethnography, and then the world-renowned Spanish Riding School, called Spanische Hofreitschue.

While visiting the Hofburg castle, you should take time to see the massive Heldenplatz, which translates to “spare of heroes.” All around the grounds of the castle are equestrian statues of Archduke Karl, the man who went on to win the Battle of Aspern in 1809 when fighting against Napoleon and his troops. There are also statues of the Prince Eugene of Savoy, who was best known for conquering the Turks.

The highlight of a trip to Hofburg castle (Imperial Palace) is attending Sunday mass at the chapel. In addition to being mesmerized by its beauty, you will have the incredible opportunity to hear the famous Vienna Boy’s Choir in person. Their voices are truly that of angels, perfect notes, and perfect sounds like nothing you have ever heard before.
