Ludwigsburg Palace
The Ludwigsburg Palace in Germany is the largest Baroque palace in the country. Although the palace itself is spectacular, the Baroque garden is what captures the hearts of those who go to visit. Nestled in the city of Ludwigsburg, this palace at one time was known throughout Europe as having the most incredible courts.
The first stone of the foundation for the Ludwigsburg Palace was set in place in 1704, which would become the home to the Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Wurttemberg from 1694 to 1733. Just a year after construction began, the palace was given the name, “Ludwigsburg”, which translates to none other, “Ludwig’s Castle. Although this particular palace actually started as a mere hunting lodge, it quickly became a complex project. Today, the growth is what you can see as a magnificent work of art. The city of Ludwigsburg was established in 1709 next to the Duke’s palace. Then in 1718, this city actually became the capital and sole residence of the Dukes of Wurttemberg, although only temporarily. However, it was not too much later when Eberhard Ludwig, the successors, transferred the residence to Stuttgart. By 1733, construction on this Baroque style palace was complete. However, Eberhard Ludwig took the original design and decided to modify it. Currently, you see three unique and different styles associated with the Ludwigsburg Palace. First, there is the beloved Baroque, which can be seen in the main building, the building of the giants, court Capel, the games and hunting pavilions, and the restroom in the new main building. The second style is called Rococo. With this, it is obvious in the new main building, the Order Chapel, and the Duke’s private suite, which were all modifications ordered by the Duke Carl Eugen. Finally, you have the Empire style, seen in the Marble Hall, the King’s audience chamber, the King’s library, and the Queen’s bedroom, which were modifications coming from King Friedrich. With so many different architects working on the palace over the years coupled with resident’s personal taste, the Ludwigsburg Palace is a beautiful mix of various styles. Even so, they all work together, making this a stunning place to visit. Of course, the outside gardens that grace the grounds and the three museums to include the Baroque Gallery, the Porcelain Museum, and the Baroque Fashion Museum, all make this Germany’s favorite and most impressive palace. When visiting Ludwigsburg Palace, just make time to visit the gardens, which are truly breathtaking. Although each visitor has his or her favorite, one that most agree is simply amazing is the East Garden. This particular garden sits high on a rocky plateau that overlooks the Northern Garden. From there, you can see Emichsburg Castle, which sits on a ten-yard tall sheer cliff that is actually not more than a tower. Today, this castle serves as a stairwell that goes fro the East Garden to the North Garden located below. Without doubt, Ludwigsburg Palace is art, as is the gardens.
