Mt.Fuji
The highest mountain in all of Japan is called Mt. Fuji, reaching skyward to 12,385 feet. This mountain is the only natural feature typically explored by tourists, simply because it is so magnificent. This perfectly symmetrical volcanic core last blew in 1707.
At that time, the ash spewed from the volcano covered the streets of the city of Tokyo, some 60 miles away. Today, when in Tokyo, if the day is clear you will enjoy a wonderful view of Mt. Fuji but unfortunately, on most days, the mountain is difficult to see primarily due to low clouds. Interestingly, you will have a better chance of seeing the snowcaps of the mountain during the early spring months. If you plan to backpack or trek the mountain, then you should plan to visit in July and August, the “official” season for climbing. Keep in mountain that Mt. Fuji can be climbed all year round but if you want to enjoy a trip with a skilled guide and other climbers also eager to climb, you would do best by following the official months. The Japanese people tell visitors that when climbing Mt. Fuji they need to take it seriously. Since the weather can change extremely fast and altitude sickness is a real, risk, this is not for the inexperienced climber. If you plan to climb to the top of Mt. Fuji, schedule your time to reach the top at dawn. With this, you will have the opportunity to see one of the most incredible sunrises of your lifetime. At this time of the day, the mountain is not covered with clouds as much as it is later in the day. To accomplish this, you would need to start your trek in the afternoon hours. Then, you can stay overnight in a mountain hut, finishing your climb first thing in the morning. Now, some climbers will climb all night, which is an option, but again, only for experienced climbers. The ideal day trip is to head to the north side of the mountain where you will discover Fuji Five Lakes. In addition to the excitement of the climb, you can take advantage of all these lakes have to offer such as amusement parks, water sports, excellent restaurants, ice caves, and more. Considered a sacred mountain that was first discovered some 10,000 years ago, Mt. Fuji is climbed by over 200,000 people each year. Of those climbers, about 30% are people from other countries eager to enjoy this magical mountain just like you.
