Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu, also known as the lost city, is one of the world’s most spectacular ruins. If you want adventure when visiting Peru, then you must add this trip to the top of your list of things to do and see.

These ruins are surrounded by mystery. After climbing, you will reach the top of the mountain where you will not believe your eyes. There, is a massive city constructed of rock and stone, sitting on a plateau with an unbelievable view out over vast green land. One of the great mysteries is how the massive rocks to build this city were brought to the top, especially for that day and age.

Machu Picchu is located about 70 miles from the city of Cuzco, a little over three hours by train. Located in the magnificent jungle of South America, the ruins of Machu Picchu are estimated at being built around the mid-15th century. Machu Picchu Peru The architecture, which was built by the Inca Pachacutecs, was not discovered until 1911 when Hiram Bingham, an American explorer made the discovery. Today, once you reach the top, you will almost feel an invisible force of spirituality perfectly balanced with breathtaking nature. Historians tell us that the only people allowed access to this city were priests, priestesses, noblemen, and chosen women known as Akllas.

The sanctuary is found on the eastern slop of Machu Picchu and actually in two different areas. The first is an agricultural area and the second urban. For the urban section, there are a number of impressive dwellings and even canal systems, temples, squares, royal houses, and mausoleums. Then on the other part of the ruins is the agricultural area where the grass is emerald green. These ruins teach us that numerous levels of architecture were created, each consistently, perfectly, and with precision.

Typically, the roofs of the buildings were made from tree trunks thatched with straw. Then the walls of the buildings were designed to lean inward just a little, as a way of protecting the structures from earthquakes. As you look out over the peak of the Huayna Picchu, which is located on the other side of the ruins, you will see a view that no words can describe. The panoramic view looks out over the Urubamba Valley, truly heaven-like.

The climate at Machu Picchu is tropical, temperatures averaging throughout the year around 60 degrees. Even so, Machu Picchu has two distinct seasons. The first runs from November to March at which time the area receives tremendous rain, which is why everything remains so incredibly green. Then, you have the second season, running from April to October and considered the dry season. During this season, temperatures are warmer but still very comfortable. When visiting Peru, find a reputable local guide, bring comfortable clothing, and good hiking boots so you can see for yourself this spectacular area of the world.
