Alhambra in Granada
The city of Granada in Spain is one shrouded in mystery. Although its origins are not clearly identified or understood, you can be sure there are a number of fables and legends, making this a fascinating place. As an example, one of the more elaborate stories about Granada is that it was a city during biblical times, specifically around the time of Noah and the great flood. However, other theories state Granada was founded in Hercules, while others believe it had to do with various Mediterranean civilizations.
Through years of research, we do know that the city of Granada in Spain was founded by the Iberian tribe of the Turdulos. Of all tribes, this one was the most civilized and they were the first people to inhabit the Iberian Peninsula. In fact, the Iberian tribe founded another city, the city of Ihverir, which when the Romans moved in, became Iliberis. However, the Romans changed the city into a magnificent municipality so after the first two names, it also became known as Florentia. This Roman settlement was founded on today’s areas of the Alcazaba and Albaicin, which covers the area all the way up the hill to Alhambra. Unfortunately, no official documents or traditions of the Visigothic period were kept regarding the people of Alhambra in Granada although excavations have uncovered a number of metals and coins. Even so, leading historians and scientists believe that Granada was the capital city for this province at the conclusion of the Roman period, specifically due to the fact that Barbarian invasion caused an increase in the number of military power within the city while decreasing the number of settlements. After the Muslims came to the area in 711, Iliberis became known as Elvira although it was later destroyed in 1010, causing the inhabitants to move to Albaicin. Then, the founder of the Ziri dynasty made Granada an independent kingdom in 1013, Until 1238, the dynasty ruled but soon, another dynasty was founded by Muhammad Ibn Yusuf Ibn Nasar called the Nasrid dynasty, which went on to conquer Granada again. At this time, Alhambra was rebuilt, reigning until 1492 when the troops of the Catholic Monarchs conquered the remaining Muslim city, which resulted in the final Nasrid king surrendering. The name "Alhambra" received its name because of the red walls, which in Arabic translates to "Red Castle". Located on the top of the hill named al-Sabika, which is located on the riverbank Darro. To the west of the city is Granada, and to the front, neighborhoods of Alcazaba and Albaicin. Alhambra in Granada has had a long difficult history although determining the true history has been more than challenging. Today, this area is absolutely, beautiful, dotted with buildings of magnificent architecture, warm and inviting people, and an area that provides you with a special glimpse into the early years of Spain.
